Calls published for the Marie Curie scheme under FP6 to improve mobility of researchers within the European Research Area
Editorial team, Eurosurveillance editorial office.
If the European Research Area is to function successfully, researchers from European Union (EU) member states, EU candidate countries, and other associated states need to be able to move easily and quickly between the countries for research and work purposes.
Twelve calls for proposals have been published for the Marie Curie scheme (under the Sixth Framework Research Programme (FP6,
http://www.cordis.lu/fp6/home.html) specific programme 2, 'Structuring the European Research Area', as priority 2, 'Human resources and mobility'), which seeks to improve the mobility of researchers, promote the development and transfer of research competencies, and consolidate and widen researchers' career prospects
(http://fp6.cordis.lu/fp6/calls_activity.cfm?ID_ACTIVITY=594). The scheme aims to redress current imbalances in
three areas:
- the underrepresentation of women within all actions. The European Commission and the host organisations will endeavour to reach the objective of at least 40 percent selection of women.
- the personal circumstances relating to mobility, particularly with respect to the family, career development and languages.
- the development of research activity in the less favoured regions of the EU and associated candidate countries, and to the need for increased and more effective co-operation between research disciplines and between academia and industry, including SMEs.
More information on general objectives and principles can be found in the work programme for the Marie Curie Actions, which can be downloaded from
http://fp6.cordis.lu/fp6/call_details.cfm?CALL_ID=23.
The deadlines for the first round of calls fall between 1 April and 22 May 2003.
