Abstract

O sarampo é uma doença aguda altamente contagiosa caracterizada por febre, tosse, coriza, conjuntivite, eritema maculopapular e enantema patognomónico (manchas de Koplik). Dez por cento dos casos complicam-se de otite média ou broncopneumonia e a encefalite ocorre em 1 de cada 1000 casos. As complicações ocorrem mais frequentemente com o aumento da idade. Desde 1989, nos Estados Unidos morreram três em cada 1000 casos notificados (1).
