Abstract

O aparecimento de infecções hospitalares devidas a bactérias resistentes aos antimicrobianos, tais como os enterococos resistentes à vancomicina (ERV), tornou-se uma preocupação universal. Nos hospitais dos Estados Unidos (EU), o ERV disseminou-se rapidamente e actualmente é responsável por um décimo das infecções enterocócicas adquiridas em hospital e notificadas para o Programa Nacional de Vigilância das Infecções Nosocomiais do CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) (1).
